Our Spirit in 2009. We asked what makes Australia great...this is what you said:
Australians have a love for this country which we don't take for granted, even if it goes unsaid. We're proud of who
we are and what we have achieved, yet this pride is not just blind nationalism. Our spirit is one of self -confidence and
sophistication with many submissions focussed on our cultural and artistic achievements, medical and technological
innovations and business success. There remains a deep affection for the traditional fun Aussie qualities of ironic
humour and the larrikin spirit. We're also enlightened and motivated by our endless opportunities and equality for all.
The freedom to pursue our dreams in this land gives everyone the chance to 'make it.' Finally there's community
spirit. As Aussies we recognise that individual achievement rarely occurs without a helping hand from others.
Despite our differences we all know that when adversity strikes, whether in the form of bushfires, floods
or international conflict, there'll be a fellow Aussie to help out. Teamwork: It's the tradition of the digger,
the character of mateship and it's still the essence of the Australian spirit.
